Each gate corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. When activated in your chart, a gate expresses its unique energy theme through the center it belongs to.
Understanding Human Design Gates
In Human Design, the 64 gates correspond directly to the 64 hexagrams of the ancient Chinese I Ching (Book of Changes). The I Ching was traditionally used as an oracle, and in Human Design, it maps the genetic codons and the quantum field of consciousness.
Gates are activated when a planet (or calculation point like the Earth or North Node) occupies that gate's position in the ecliptic at the time of your birth or design calculation. Both the Personality (conscious) and Design (unconscious) calculations contribute gates to your chart.
A single activated gate creates a "hanging gate" — a half channel that seeks its complementary gate in others. When two people together have both halves of a channel activated, they form an electromagnetic connection. When you have both gates activated within your own chart, the channel is defined and you have consistent access to its energy.
Each gate has 6 lines, representing the 6 possible expressions of that hexagram's energy. The line your planet activates affects how you express the gate's theme.
