PHS: Eating by Your Human Design

The Primary Health System (PHS) reveals your optimal digestion type and environment for eating.

The Primary Health System (PHS) is one of the most practical and often overlooked aspects of Human Design. While most people start with type and authority, PHS gets down to the body's specific needs for optimal health, digestion, and brain function.

What Is PHS?

PHS was developed by Ra Uru Hu as part of the deeper layers of Human Design analysis. It identifies six "digestion" types that describe the optimal conditions under which your body absorbs nutrients and your brain functions best.

The PHS is derived from the position of your Design (unconscious) Sun's gate and line, and involves two main variables: your digestion type and your environment type.

The Six Digestion Types

1. Appetite (Calm environment)

These individuals digest best in calm, relaxed settings. Eating in noisy, chaotic environments impairs their digestion. Meal prep and mindful eating are essential.

2. Taste (Social environment)

Taste types need social engagement to properly enjoy and process food. Eating alone consistently is not optimal. These people often find food tastier in good company.

3. Thirst (Selective eating)

These individuals are sensitive to what they eat. They thrive with carefully chosen, high-quality foods and may have strong reactions to foods that don't work for them.

4. Touch (Temperature sensitivity)

Touch types are sensitive to the temperature of their food and environment. They may need warm foods in cold seasons, or prefer specific textures.

5. Sound (Background noise)

Sound types are affected by the auditory environment during eating. The right background music or ambient sound can actually improve digestion.

6. Light (Light sensitivity)

Light types are affected by lighting conditions. They may digest better in natural light or need specific lighting to properly process food.

How to Work with PHS

Working with your PHS is about observation. Start by noticing how you feel after eating in different circumstances:

  • Alone vs. with others
  • Calm environments vs. busy restaurants
  • Morning vs. evening
  • Hot vs. cold foods
  • Natural light vs. artificial light
  • The goal isn't perfection — it's gradual attunement. As you get more aligned with your PHS, you may notice improvements in energy, digestion, sleep, and mental clarity.

*Note: PHS is part of the advanced analysis of Human Design and is typically covered in professional chart readings.*
